đź’€ Character Information
Name: Edward Elric
Canon: Fullmetal Alchemist: Conqueror of Shamballa
Canon Point: The beginning of CoS before he meets Noah
Age: 18
Description: After an impressive growth spurt, Ed manages to reach a incredible height of 5'5 as long as you count his heeled boots and antenna, which you should. He does. His signature braid from the original series has been traded in for a ponytail that hangs just below his shoulder blades, but the antenna between his bangs still stands tall. Despite a somewhat miniature frame, a life of physical fighting has assured a surprisingly muscular build. His hair is the same blonde as much of his team, but his eyes are golden in contrast to their blue.
Ed's most notable features are usually hidden under his clothing: a prosthetic arm and leg. Steel limbs that acts much like the real thing, they're covered by an artificial sleeve that's meant to mimic the look of real skin but is a bit too pale for his body.
Physical changes: None
Powers: Alchemy is the transformation of matter and as an alchemist, this is Ed's specialty. Normally, this process requires a transmutation circle, but because of a taboo he broke at a young age, he's now able to activate his transmutations by clapping his hands together and subsequently pressing his hands to the material.
There are limitations. The resulting products must be exactly equal to the material used with no exceptions. While some alchemists do seem to skirt around this rule, Ed himself never does. In Hell, I imagine the landscape will be different and for the time being, that will limit him. Without understanding the makeup, he'll only be able to work on the materials he does know such as woods and metals. If you want this further nerfed, let me know!
History: Wiki link! Please note that if the mods do additional research, the 2003 anime does deviate very much from the manga and the subsequent series “Brotherhood”.
Conqueror of Shamballa is explained a bit more at the bottom, but since it's a continuation of the 2003 series, both apply.
Hell Status: Hell Newbie
What Brings Them To Hell: Aside from being a devout atheist, he and his brother commit a very grave sin at the beginning of the series: human transmutation. After their mother's death, they study the human body, and attempt to bring her back to life. This is alchemy's greatest taboo, something they knew before the experiment. While they fail to bring back their mother, they do create some kind of monster that's in very obvious pain, a creature that someone else has to handle for them. Not only does he not believe in god, he admits to actively trying to play one in that moment.
However, he is also prone to violent outbursts, both physical and verbal, and his military expenses are sometimes used to cover things like action figures, comics, and candy. Ed often lies, and only takes responsibility for the property he destroys when forced to.
Aside from all those other shining traits, he's been known to cheat and steal through cheating. Not only does he not play fairly in cards, he also uses alchemy to win an arm wrestling contest with a monetary prize.
There's some glutton and sloth too, but those probably really aren't judged too harshly.
The Pitch:
Why only enjoy one character when you can enjoy a lot of different, often subverted, tropes thrown into one! Ed is many, many things which creates a really complex, interesting character.
Stubborn, strong, physically fit, problems with anger management? That's typical enough for a shounen hero, but unlike many who have to rely just on their strength and raw fighting talent, Ed is a genius. As someone who studied and understood a multitude of sciences of at a ridiculous young age, learning and reading has never been a chore for him. In between explosive bouts of anger, he's able to sit quietly and calmly, losing himself in books for hours or days at a time. That makes him no less violent or loud, and he is often both at the same time. Don't mention his height. Or do. It's funny.
Do you enjoy a selfish hero more? He's that too! Despite being on a train during a robbery, he has no intentions to help until he's insulted and, as a result, hurts one of the criminals. It was fine if they were just going to steal things, but if they're going to possibly kill in retribution, he really might need to put his nap off until later. If a selfless hero is more your style, you'll find that in Ed too. He often risks his life to save others or to do The Right Thing as long as he's decided it's worth fighting for. When they try to bring his mother back, his brother Al is pulled into the Gate where all things just kind of are. To bring him back Ed sacrifices his arm and offers to sacrifice more. That's probably an example of both selfishness and selflessness as he couldn't live with himself if Al had died.
In between killing people for mocking his height - he doesn't really do that, killing is bad; he just hurts them a lot - and learning lots of numbers, he also manages to squeeze in a guilt complex. At the tender age of 12, he joins the military so that he can find the information he needs to get Al out of the suit of armor his soul had to be anchored to and back into a real body. His brother wants to be a real boy.
Hard-working when he wants to be, lazy when he doesn't, you can only depend on knowing what he'll do based on rather or not he has a personal interest in it. He'll go to great lengths to save a life, but he can't be bothered with writing up his military reports with any kind of skill or anything boring like that. Protecting those important to him is something he finds very important, with Winry being an obvious example and Al a slightly quieter one. But that doesn't mean he's going to be nice to them in between!
Setting Fit:
He'll take a role in both science and repair, one for his own interest, the other to keep from getting stuck with a worse job he doesn't want to do. Ed's temper will surely earn him a lot of friends, and at first, he'll have a disconnect with the world around him (in CoS, it's often noted that he acts this way about the world he's in now).
As he adjusts and begins to know the residents, he'll be more agreeable, if opinionated. Authority figures will continue to annoy him - thanks for that Colonel.

To show his voice outside of Winry, I wrote an extra sample:
Hey, Al, hand me that book there, will ya?
[Though his arms are already full of books, Ed nonetheless does his best to indicate a book on the top shelf. Normally, Al carries while Ed grabs, but the library seems to enjoy giant shelves, and their ladders were under construction.
Central library is expanse, and he doesn't often get a chance to just come here and study. Between official missions and his own personal goals, not as much time is spent on research as he would have liked. When he can remedy that, he does. Today will be full of books and notes and other things he normally has to trade for fighting.]
No, Al, the one to the -- [Al, try as he might, isn't able to get the requested book without knocking the others off. The resulting avalanche manages to miss the large suit of armor, but one Fullmetal Alchemist isn't so lucky. The books in his arm mix with those falling, and his diminutive height soon disappears beneath the hard copies.
From the depths of his studios grave, Ed hears Al calling for him.]
Don't you Nii-san me! [A blonde head pops through the surface, and he grasps as if breaking through water.] You could have killed me! As soon as I get out -- Huh! Hey, Al! Stop running! Damn it! Get back here and unbury me!
